Stoner Lingo You Need To Know

The dictionary definition of a stoner is “someone who frequently uses marijuana.” Many of us fit that definition and are familiar with it but are likely surprised to see it pop up in a dictionary. Years ago, the vocabulary of pot smokers was elusive. It was a fitting disguise designed to elude those who stigmatized and vilified cannabis. Today, cannabis products are widely available across the United States. People who never thought they would use cannabis buy CBD topical creams off store shelves, and others get ounces of marijuana delivered to their doorstep. Now, anyone who uses cannabis products needs to learn the language of cannabis. Here is some stoner lingo you need to know.

Essential Stoner Lingo

Pot/Weed/Mary Jane/etc.Strains and Cannabinoids

All of the different names for marijuana are too numerous to count. Pot, weed, Mary Jane, chronic, reefer, ganga, and much more all refer to marijuana. However, marijuana is just the colloquial name for cannabis flower. The sticky, green cannabis buds are ideal for grinding up into small particles and packing into a thick joint or big bowl. Then, sit back, relax, and enjoy the high.

Hemp

Much like marijuana, hemp also refers to cannabis flower. However, there is one key difference: hemp does not cause a high. Hemp abounds with the organic compounds in cannabis but lacks the compound THC, which causes the famous cannabis high. Therefore, almost all cannabis topical creams, muscle relaxers, and sleep supplements are infused with hemp instead of marijuana.

Baked

Just like marijuana, the cannabis community has countless terms for describing a high. Stoned, baked, and fried are the most common terms. However, if you took a massive dose of cannabis, mumbling the phrase “I’m soooo high” will also suffice.

Dank

You’ve likely heard dank in a different context, such as describing a dark, wet, and musty cave. However, when referring to cannabis, dank has a very positive connotation. Calling cannabis dank means that it is moist and sticky, indicating that the cannabis will be very potent. Also, people might call cannabis dank after smoking it, which means that it was really good stuff.

Loud

Very similar to dank, loud refers not to the noise of cannabis but to the smell. If someone says, “The weed is loud,” it means that the cannabis flower has a powerful odor. Although there is no origin for this phrase, one can infer that the noticeable smell of cannabis will draw everyone’s attention like a loud noise, hence the term. Furthermore, much like dank, a loud smell is also an indicator of high-quality cannabis.

Couch Locked

The term couch locked refers to a stoner phenomenon of being unable to get up from a couch or comfy chair. As the chill high envelops your body and relaxes your muscles, you plop down on your couch and are seemingly “trapped” by the comfort. Therefore, you are “locked” in your couch, usually for several pleasant hours while you enjoy watching TV, scrolling through your phone, or playing video games.

Mind High

Being couch locked comes from an intense body high, which relaxes your mind and muscles. In contrast, a mind high is generally seen as more cerebral, impacting your cognition but not creating the same lethargic state. A mind-high is best suited for people who are about to be active and expend energy, such as partygoers.
